3D Modeling Technologies in the Treatment of Bone Tumors

Partners: Koln 3D Technology (Hong Kong, China)

In 2021, for the first time in Kazakhstan, KazIOR began actively applying 3D technology in the treatment of tumors of long bones. Since 2022, surgeries on pelvic bone tumors have been performed using 3D technology. Additionally, in 2023, the Head and Neck Tumor Center performed, for the first time, two reconstructions of the mandible using 3D modeling.

To implement this project, a long-term memorandum was signed with the Chinese company Koln 3D Technology with participation from the University of Hong Kong. Patient CT scan data are sent to Hong Kong, and a specialized pelvic prosthesis is manufactured using 3D printing from cobalt-chrome alloy. The implementation of this technology is groundbreaking and promising, as it allows limb preservation, improves quality of life, and reduces patient disability.

3D Modeling Technologies for the Manufacture of Individual Implants

Partners: Koln 3D Technology (Hong Kong, China)

At KazNIIOiR, advanced 3D technology is applied to produce patient-specific implants. Each plate is designed according to the patient’s anatomical features, ensuring precise placement and improving treatment effectiveness. Based on CT data, specialists create a three-dimensional model of the patient’s anatomy, which allows accurate planning of implant placement and minimizes surgical intervention.

Robotic Surgery

Currently, KazIOR is implementing new methods of surgical treatment for malignant tumors. This includes robotic surgery in oncological urology, gynecology, and abdominal oncology using the next-generation robotic surgical platform — Sage bot SR–2000.

📉Advantages of robotic surgery:
  • Increased effectiveness in common forms of cancer;
  • Minimal tissue trauma while maintaining the required surgical scope;
  • 3D visualization of the surgical field for higher precision;
  • Microsurgical maneuverability of instruments;
  • Reduced physical strain on the surgical team;
  • Intelligent patient safety systems.

Sterile Consoles

Sterile consoles have been introduced at KazIOR, integrated into the walls of operating rooms, providing instant access to medical images, electronic patient records, and test results. This is particularly important in situations that require immediate decisions, whether an emergency or precise surgical intervention at oncological stages.
The equipment is manufactured by ACL GmbH, Germany, a global leader in digital surgical solutions.

📍Capabilities of the new workstations:

  • Display CT, MRI, X-ray, mammography, and other studies directly in the operating room;
  • Connect to information systems (MIS, PACS, RIS, HIS), eliminating paper documentation;
  • Automatically track medications via barcode scanning, reducing the risk of errors;
  • Enable remote operation streaming for educational purposes or multidisciplinary consultations;
  • Ensure strict hygiene and sterility standards.

📉Benefits of implementing these solutions:
  • Reduced preparation time for surgery;
  • Reduced workload on physicians due to automated documentation;
  • Improved diagnostic accuracy and coordination among specialists;
  • Creation of a unified digital environment where surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, and radiologists “speak the same language.”
